Hordenine (p-dimethylaminoethylphenol) has the effects of relaxing bronchial smooth muscle, constricting blood vessels, vasopressor, raising blood pressure, and stimulating the central nervous system.

Physical properties: White oblique prismatic crystals (ethanol or benzene petroleum ether), needle shaped crystals (water). Melting point 117~118 ℃. Boiling point 173 ℃ (1463Pa), sublimation at 140-150 ℃. Highly soluble in ethanol, chloroform, and ether, 7g soluble in 1000ml of water, slightly soluble in benzene, toluene, and xylene, almost insoluble in petroleum ether.

Detection method: High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) ≥ 98%.

Source: Found in the roots of sprouted barley seeds, the roots of leguminous plant Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., the stems of D. tiliaefolium G. Don, and the heartwood of D. cephalotes Wall. Abroad, it mainly exists in the Lophophora williamsii, San Pedro cactus (Echinops pachanoi), and Peruvian torch cactus (Echinops peruviana).
